Princess Diana!

This poem by Charlotte Pearson (12) from Milton Keynes won our competition for 2 Tickets to the fabulous Concert for Diana at Wembley Stadium.

Princess Diana!

I’ve heard about you on the radio,
The TV and the papers.
I’ve heard about all the good things you’ve done,
And about how you tragically died.

I’ve always thought you a great person,
Someone unique and understanding.
How you helped in all those charities,
Everyone was the same to you.

All those people you helped,
Sick children and people dieing of cancer.
The homeless and another hundred charities
Are grateful and love you for what you have done.

I myself have experience of your kindness,
I had Aids-in fact I still do.
Those who knew turned away,
They didn’t want to know me.

I hated my life back then,
From when I was diagnosed.
People searches for any excuse to get away,
Afraid of catching ‘infection’.

When I entered a room full of noise,
It went silent.
As if I were the walking dead,
It made me burst into tears.

My mates were no longer my mates,
And the bullies all picked on me.
Cries of “Ewww, don’t take that, she’s touched it!” and the such followed me all day,
Even my family treated me different.

But you changed all that for me,
You turned my life around.
You saved me from a mass depression,
You taught me to laugh and smile.

You told people that knew me that I am the same as I was,
That I’d be the same whatever I had.
You introduced me to others with Aids or HIV,
And I saw how right you were.

But now you’re dead-oh I wish you weren’t,
You didn’t desrve to die.
Many people will sorely miss you,
I shall be top of that list.

When people talk of saints,
I think not of Florence Nightingale - nor Mother Theresa,
I think of you - the best person who’s roamed this earth,
Princess Diana - the people’s friend!
