Lots of young writers enjoyed entering our Big Party competition. You might like to use the ideas and write your own party piece.

Ever read a Banana book? They’re like bananas… once you’ve had one you’ll want to have another another day. Ah! but could you WRITE one? Have a go! Or you might like to have a go at a book review, inspired by The Ultimate Book Guide. Or you might be inspired by the titles of Macmillan’s poetry books (we had some great entries to that competition!). Or how about designing your own school? We all know what fun J.K. Rowling had with that idea! We also talk about diaries. Your own or someone else’s (ever read Adrian Mole’s?)

Our Guest Author was Valerie Bloom, a wonderful Jamaican poet who lives in Kent. She has interesting things to say about one’s first or second language. She is also a performance poet and talks about that. And about ghosts… and food… and politics… All our guests authors give good advice about how to write better yourself. For our ‘Dead Poet’s Wake’ column Ian Macmillan explains why he just loves the poetry of Dylan Thomas.

Fun with spelling (yes, why not? Ever thought about puns?), Full Stops and other sentence endings, a silly Mix ‘N Match book you can make yourself… Stuff you need to know doesn’t have to be boring!

Veronica Isaac visited the Cheltenham Festival. There might be a festival near you. Her article will help you know what to expect and inspire you to go along and enjoy yourself.
