Issue 27

Why not visit one of the National Trust properties and find out a story connected with it? Or you could use it as a setting for a story or poem of your own!

Do you have a pet? Or do you wish you had one? Or could you imagine one you REALLY wouldn’t want?! Be inspired by our Write…write…write… ideas on page 4.

Our New Books competitions could inspire you to write about discrimination, or some really dreadful children or try your hand at a bit of biography or imagine what might happen when you step out of a lift… Read the books or write your own story. Or both. We think that reading David Almond’s wonderful books might inspire you to think again about settings, where you place your story and how you describe it. Here’s one of the questions we put to him: ‘Do you think that magic can be real or is it all in the imagination? How do you personally define ‘real’ and ‘fantasy’?’ Read his answer in our Guest Author interview.

Know anything about the poet Vachel Lindsay? Simon Pitt introduces him in ‘Dead Poet’s Wake’. We also tell you about three splendid poetry collections assembled by Anne Fine who really, really wants you not to miss the poems she has chosen.

Want to know about homophones and homonyms? Or mini sagas? How good are you at using subtle tense differences? Read about them in Issue 27!

Or just enjoy the great writing from other young writers. There’s lots of it!
