Story of the Week

Oops-a-Daisy Amy

Each week we publish a Story of the Week on this site. Enjoy this, ‘Oops-a-Daisy Amy‘ by Gemma Middlehurst (8) Cheshire. Gemma wins £20 of books generously donated by Scholastic Children’s Books.

Amy was a little girl but she was always clumsy.

One day when Amy went to school she did art and …
Oops-a-Daisy Amy!

Amy said, “I never meant to knock the paint over!”
“Maybe art isn’t your thing,” said her teacher.

When Amy went home her mum asked, “How was art?”
“Not good, I knocked the paint pot over,” said Amy.
“Maybe art isn’t your thing,” said her mum.

When Amy went to bed she tripped over her night light.
“Oops-a-Daisy Amy!“ said her mum. “You must try to be more careful.”
“Oh no!” said Amy. “Night, night, Mum.”

On Tuesday Amy did maths.
Amy drew all of the shapes wrong.
“Oops-a-Daisy Amy!” said her teacher.
“Oh no,” said Amy.
“Maybe maths isn’t your thing,” said her teacher.

When Amy went home her mum asked, “How was maths?”
“Not very good. I drew all the shapes wrong!” answered Amy.
“Maybe maths isn’t your thing,” said her mum. “Perhaps a good night’s sleep will help.`’

On Wednesday Amy did science.
“Oops-a-Daisy Amy!“ said her teacher. “You put the ice cubes in the hot bowl and melted them all.”
“Maybe science isn’t your thing,” said her teacher.

When Amy went home her mum asked, “How was science today?”
“Not very good. My experiment went wrong and I melted all the ice cubes!”
“Oh dear,” said her mum. “Maybe science isn’t your thing.”

On Thursday Amy did P.E.
“Oops-a-Daisy Amy!” said her teacher. “You have broken a window with the tennis ball.”
“Maybe P.E. isn’t your thing,” said her teacher.

When Amy went home her mum asked, “How was P.E. today?”
“Not very good. I broke a window with a tennis ball while we were playing rounders.”
“Oh dear,” said her mum. “Maybe P.E. isn’t your thing.”
“There is nothing I am good at in school!” cried Amy and she ran off to bed.
Amy’s mum knew that one day she would find something that she would enjoy and be good at.

On Friday Amy did English.
It was reading time in Language.
Her teacher said, “I have a sore throat so I will not be able to read to you today.”
“I will read the story,” said Amy.
“Maybe reading is not your thing,” replied her teacher.
“Please let me try, I like reading,” said Amy.
“OK, I suppose it won’t harm to try,” said her teacher.
Amy read the story beautifully and the class all enjoyed it so much that they gave her a big round of applause.
“Well,” said her teacher, “reading IS your thing! Well done, Amy!”

When Amy went home her mum asked, “How was English today?”
Amy smiled and told her mum all about story time.
“I KNEW reading was your thing,” laughed her mum.

Well done Gemma. I really enjoyed your story, i could feel the suspense building up as i didn’t know what the character Amy was going to do next - this made me want to read on to find out what happened, and whether or not she’d get into more trouble. I’m pleased she found something that she was good at in the end. A lovely, well written story. I hope you continue to enjoy writing.

It was ok, I guess, but not the best. Nice try, though. Good luck NEXT time.

It was very good but you could have put more exiting words for how they said it instead of ’said’.

Hi Gemma! I think your story is good, but in my opinion it would appeal more to younger children, because they usually have a catchphrase like “Peek-a-boo!” or “Whoops-A-Daisy!”. Like you had “Oops-A-Daisy Amy and “I guess ….. isn’t your thing”. Thumbs-up!

I think that is an awesome story for an 8-year-old. If you keep writing stories like this, one day you might become an author! By the way, how did you come up with the name ‘Oops-a-Daisy Amy?’ It’s brilliant!!!
