Aliens

We’re really enjoying reading all the latest competition entries (see the latest Young Writer magazine for more info). Here’s an entertaining tale about aliens, written by Elizabeth Walker (12), Manchester.
THUD!
‘What was that for?’ said Soto getting up from the floor.
‘Sorry’ said Nodge, ‘I’m just so excited. I love going on our Sumore holidays.’
Soto climbed back into bed and curled up under his aluminium blanket. ‘Why are you so excited we’ve not even decided where we’re going? Holidays can be so boring. I’m sick of surfing in asteroid showers. The only thing I like about holidays is the chance to get off this stupid planet. Jupiter is SO BORING!’
‘This year mum said we would do something different and it’s going to be a surprise. I just love surprises!’ said Nodge and he started jumping up and down on Soto’s bed again, knocking his brother to the floor for a second time. THUD! ‘Stop that banging and start packing’ said their mother from the floor below.
Not being sure where they were headed presented a number of problems… shoud they pack things for heat, cold, water, ice, rock, steam, lava-flows or super-heated gas?
‘Where are we going mum?’ shouted Nodge. ‘We don’t know what to pack.’
‘We’re doing something different this year. It’s a surprise. You will need everything.’
‘EVERYTHING!’ replied Soto, ‘how can we do that?’
‘Just use the increased gravity setting on your suitcases, that will make it fit,’ replied their mum.
‘Forgot we had that,’ mumbled Nodge, as he pressed the button.
So the brothers packed everything they had… ateroid surf-boards, ultra-absorbent beach towels, spacesuits, disposable cameras, and everything else they could find. Each time their cases looked full they pressed the special button and the contents were squashed down to the size of sugar cubes. They then pressed the negative gravity switch and the cases were suddenly light enough to carry.
The family assembled in front of the house, which was about three inches tall due to the high gravity of Jupiter. In front of the house was the longest spacecoach they had ever seen, and they were welcomed on board by their tour guide Merry.
As the got on, Nodge asked his father why there were so many empty seats. His dad told him that the Jupiter credit crunch was severe due to the high gravity.
They set off on their tour. It took nearly 43 seconds to reach Pluto, where they made ice balls and skated on frozen air.
An hour later they set off for Uranus. The name made them giggle, and when they got there they went for a swin in cold soup-like clouds. The on to Saturn, where they went round the rings on their asteroid surf-boards.
After this, Merry announced that they were heading for her home planet of Mars. Here she took them to Mercentania, a town buried 100 metres below the planet’s surface. There was plenty of water there and they spend many happy hours in the heated pools.
Finally they reached Earth, a pretty planet with odd inhabitants of all sizes and colours. Although earthlings have two legs, they spend most of their time travelling in strange boxes with four round feet, complaining about holes in the ozone layer.
After several days on Earth it was time to travel home to Jupiter. Nodge and Soto had had a wonderful time and on the quick journey home wondered what their parents would plan for the next year.
